\nInedible; used for aromatic oils and natural perfumes. Salvia uliginosa, also known as marsh sage, is a perennial plant native to South America, prized for its spectacular flowering and its predilection for moist soil. Unlike many other sages, which like dry soil, this species thrives in cool, well-watered situations. Main features Growth habit: A vigorous herbaceous perennial, it spreads via stolons and can reach a considerable height, sometimes up to 2 metres. It has an upright habit which makes it ideal as a backdrop for borders. Flowers: It flowers late in the summer and autumn and is distinguished by its bright sky-blue flowers, which bloom in large numbers on slender stems. It is very attractive to birds, bees and butterflies. Foliage: The leaves are green and sometimes have a slightly peppery taste, earning it the nickname 'pepper sage'. Hardiness: It is moderately hardy and can withstand temperatures down to around -10\u00b0C, but does not tolerate drought. Cultivation and care Exposure: prefers a position in full sun. Soil: It requires fresh, moist and well-drained soil. It does not tolerate drought, unlike other sage varieties. Watering: Needs regular watering to keep the soil constantly moist. Propagation: It is easily propagated by division of the heads or by cuttings. Use in the garden: It is ideal for wet borders, bog gardens or areas of the garden that receive a lot of water. Varieties There are a number of cultivars, such as Salvia uliginosa 'African Skies', which are distinguished by a particularly intense flower colour, or Salvia uliginosa 'Balon Azul', a dwarf version of the species. Harvesting period: The ideal period for harvesting Salvia uliginosa in Sicily is from June to October, during its flowering period, for maximum aromatic intensity. However, harvesting can also take place at other times of the year, as sage is a perennial plant that allows scalar harvesting. For a high-quality harvest, harvesting is recommended at the time of maximum flowering and vegetative vigour, which coincides with the balsamic period. Best period: June to October is the best period, coinciding with its prolonged flowering. Scaled harvesting: Sage can be harvested throughout the year, taking the leaves one at a time. Optimum harvest time: Harvesting is best in the period before flowering for a particularly intense scent. For herbal use, the ideal time is the balsamic period, when the plant is in full bloom and has the highest concentration of active ingredients. Harvesting for drying: For drying, stems can be cut off and hung upside down. Climatic factors: The optimal harvest time may vary depending on the local climate, sun exposure and soil type.<\/p>\n
