Not edible; used for soil remediation and in herbal medicine for soothing extracts. Limoniastrum monopetalum is a shrubby evergreen plant typical of Mediterranean coastal environments. It is highly valued in sustainable gardening for its remarkable drought and saltiness resistance, making it ideal for rock gardens, littoral or arid gardens. Main features Growth habit: It appears as a dense, compact shrub, which can exceed one metre in height and two metres in width, forming a typical 'cushion'. Foliage: The leaves are grey-green, alternate and rich in minerals. Due to their resistance to an often hostile environment, they have a leathery, waxy appearance. Flowers: Flowering occurs between late spring and summer, usually from June to September. The flowers are small and pink or lilac in colour, gathered in light and airy panicles. Resistance: It is a xerophytic plant, i.e. adapted to drier environments with low water availability. It also withstands cold well, with a tolerated minimum temperature of around -5°C. Natural habitat: it grows on sandy and sandy-loamy soils, typical of coastal communities. In Italy it is found mainly in the coastal areas of Apulia, Sardinia and Sicily. Cultivation and care Exposure: prefers a position in full sun. Soil: it adapts to any type of soil, even sandy soil, as long as it is well drained. It does not tolerate water stagnation. Watering: It requires very little water and tolerates drought well. Usage: Perfect for Mediterranean, rocky and coastal gardens. Its flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects. Harvesting period: The harvesting period for Limoniastrum monopetalum , also known as limonio , in Sicily is from the end of December to May, with variations depending on the variety and area of cultivation. It is advisable not to extend the harvest beyond April so as not to compromise the following year's production. General period: late December - May Varieties and areas: ripening may vary slightly depending on the type of citrus fruit and the area. Harvesting tip: harvest in stages and no later than the end of April to preserve future production.
